An Ubuntu Server LTS Linux VPS is the best starting point if you follow online documentation: most Docker, Node.js and Python tutorials are written for Ubuntu. A Debian Linux VPS uses less RAM at idle and changes behaviour less between releases — the pick for servers you install once and leave running. Both share the APT package manager, so switching later is inexpensive.
